About Us

The Gluten Intolerance Group of Central and South Texas, also known as GIG of Central and South Texas, is a branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group® of North America, also known as GIG®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The mission of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America is to provide support to persons with gluten intolerances, including celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and other gluten sensitivities, in order for them to live healthy lives. As a GIG branch, GIG of Central and South Texas helps to fulfill GIG’s mission on a local and regional level through programs tailored to our communities.

Members of GIG of Central and South Texas may participate in the meetings our branch holds in Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. Each of these cities has its own chair and other officers. The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter whether you live in one of these metropolitan areas or in one of the smaller communities; your membership in GIG of Central and South Texas makes you eligible to take part in any events hosted by our branch.

In addition to meetings and other events, the responsibilities of GIG of Central and South Texas include membership, defensive dining, treasurer, database, newsletter, and website.

Members of GIG of Central and South Texas exchange information and discuss medical and dietary topics relating to gluten sensitivity at our meetings and through our branch newsletter. We have speakers at some meetings, but the most important thing we provide is an opportunity for people with celiac disease, other gluten intolerances, or dermatitis herpetiformis to visit with one another, ask questions, learn more about their disease and the gluten-free diet, and share recipes and experiences.

Every issue of our monthly newsletter, Living Well Gluten Free, is filled with information and articles we hope you will find interesting and useful. Our objective is to help our members as they progress from not having heard of gluten intolerance or the gluten-free diet to a depth of knowledge that enables them to protect their health or the health of family members from the debilitating effects of undiagnosed, untreated celiac disease, other gluten intolerances, or dermatitis herpetiformis. We also provide tips on living gluten free, let you know about new gluten-free products and sources, share experiences and recipes, help you dine out and travel gluten free, and try to keep you coming back for more!

A diagnosis of celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or dermatitis herpetiformis is not the end of the world. GIG of Central and South Texas provides information to the newly diagnosed through our New Member Packet about just what changes they need to make in their diet to return to and maintain their good health. New members also receive a copy of our Alamo Celiac Cookbook. We also provide Gluten-Free 101 classes for new members and their families every couple of months or so in San Antonio. If you would like our help in finding your way through the “gluten thicket”, you will find a Membership Form on our Join page that you can print and mail to us with your check for annual dues of $20.
